Skeins of Yarn

Farm skeins are a beautiful thing!  All of our skeins are sold with the sheep's name on the label.  Why do we do this? There are many reasons!  Most importantly, it's because each sheep is a soul who produces it's own amazing fiber type and color.  It's our promise to you that each sheep is valued and given a good life.  Some of the sheep even know their own names, and most are tagged with their name, not just a number.

Do they have to die to provide fiber?  No!  Shearing occurs once a year, and feels as good to the sheep as a good day at the beauty salon feels to us.  Over the next year, the fleece grows back...sometimes in a different shade or color, to be sheared again.  We shear with hand blades at carefully chosen times, which brings health benefits to the sheep.

You will find two types of Wheelspun Yarns in our Farm Shop, natural-colored skeins, and dyed skeins.  The natural colors are the true color of that sheep, are richly variegated, and are very appealing.  They run from a black so intense that light just stops on it, to brown-black, black with silvers, creams or whites, to mocha

and chocolatey browns, fawn, honey, and many shades of cream and white!  If the yarn label has just the sheep's name on it, you have a natural colored yarn.

The brightly dyed skeins come in a range of cheerful colors with names such as Geranium, Blue Frost, Country Apple Green, and Just Peachy, to name a few, while others are softer, such as Glacier, which resembles light passing through nordic glacial ice.  Dyed skeins have the sheep's name followed by the color name on the label.

All of our Wheelspun Yarns are easily handwashed.  Learn how by clicking                         .

Skeins run at a light worsted to worsted gauge (unless otherwise noted), are sold by weight, and work beautifully for knitting or crochet.  Use them for socks, hats, scarves, sweaters, baby clothes, blankets, bags, flowers, rugs, mittens, and anything else you can think of!  They can also be felted as they are all either 100% Wool or have a tiny amount of glitz in them.  Pair natural colors with each other, or with dyed colors for a look that's sure to please!
